I bought an HP Media Center PD Mod, m7170n two years ago, then the nightmare began. The computer crashed on 8 occasions requiring the re-installation of all my programs at around 30 hours each time. I called tech support who kept telling me to re-install Windows XP each time. The first time I called when the computer was just over a year old, they told me that they had no record of my extended warranty purchased from HP Online store. I gave them the order number and they said it wouldn't help and that I would have to pay them in advance or call HP the next week and fax a copy of the bill of sale to them.
I never heard back after doing all this. When the computer finally gave up for good, I called and this time they had the warranty on file. They said I would have to send it in, no cost to me for service. Two weeks later it returned. As I didn't have the 30 plus hours to spend re-installing programs, it took about three weeks for me to check and find that it was now locking up. It went back again, this time they lost it! They found it and I got it back in about three weeks, with the whole back smashed in and video card destroyed. They took it back yet again, it came back with something rattling inside it. I took the side off to find a little black jumper floating around loose. I tried it and now it was doing exactly what it had before it went in the first time.
Many hours on the phone, e-mail and finally getting the Better Business Bureau involved, they finally agreed to give me my money back. As they requested I boxed it up, wrote what they wanted on the box and called their courier to get it. It has been over a month, they claim to not know where it is and no talk about doing any thing more. I am now out $2200 and the evidence. They wont even call me back and the BBB is backing off helping! LOOK OUT. DON'T EVER BUY FROM HP!!!
