Standard Financial Securities And Clearing House
Notice of Sweepstake Prize Award (USD $60, 000) I think it's a scam-but how does it work?

On August 28th I received a letter in the mail saying that I had won a sweepstake prize of 60, 000-Enclosed was a check for 2, 882.91 written on wacovia bank -a partial payment of my winnings to pay the taxes of the lottery amount. I had to call to activate the check and then deposit it and wait until it CLEARED and call them back so they could tell me what the next step would be. My first thought was SCAM. but how. If the check cleared I could just keep 2, 822.91 and not send it to them. or take the risk and send them the 2700 they asked for still leaving me a profit of 122.91 if they didn't send me the "57, 177.09" Who cares I still would make money. I would never put it through my own account I would open a new account just for their check. Once the check cleared they couldn't do anything about it. So how can this scam hurt ME? It seems I would get something no matter what and they couldn't touch me.

So I was wracking my brain trying to figure out what the damaging part of the scam was and then I noticed on the top of my wacovia check it said "Stevens Aviation". Which probably meant they were stealing the money from this company and putting it through my name so that I would be responsible for the theft and they would walk away scott free with 2700. Is THIS the SCAM? Am I correct? I have put the check in a separate account by itself in a different bank than my own. I have put a call through to Stevens Aviation to discuss this matter with them. Hopefully they will call me back soon, and if they are not affected by it I will still want to discuss the matter with the bank that I have deposited this check into. I am happy to find your site or I probably would not have known this was a common scam. It's a shame I could have really used the money as I am sure we all could have. What a mean thing to do. I hate that they always get away with it. I wish there were someway to scam the scammer. HAH.
