BEWARE! IF YOU BUY SOMETHING FROM RONA/LOWES THAT REQUIRES INSTALLATION OF ANY KIND AND IT IS DEFECTIVE YOU CANNOT RETURN IT. Purchased 2 $30 BRK smoke detectors online at Rona.ca. Models were the type that are hardwired with a battery backup. Has a solid green power indicator and intermittent flashing red light When Installed properly. 1st. Unit Both indicators worked but unit chirped randomly. Issue was not battery. 1st unit defective. Installed the 2nd unit (With the original wire harness) in its place. The hardwire indicator green light would not come on. But it would run on battery. 2nd unit defective. REPLACED SMOKE DETECTOR WITH KIDDE BRAND AND WORKED FINE. Called Rona customer service to ask how to return online order. Told to return to any store. Went to closet Rona in Waterloo. They would not take it back as they were a privately owned store. Told I had to return to Corporate store. Closest was one hour away. Or call customer service and get return shipping labels. Called customer service and was told that company policy was that because I INSTALLED the smoke detectors (by stripping the wires on the wiring harness and hard wired them as per instructions) I could NOT return them to Rona for refund or store credit and had to go through the manufacturer. Told them I do not want to deal with this BRK brand as 2 out of 2 units failed and I was not comfortable with putting these Questionable quality units in my house as this is about fire safety. Not going to risk it. Rona said nothing they can do. I had to deal with manufacturer as a warranty. Brand new units defective is not a warranty issue I should have to deal with. NOTE: These BRK smoke detectors shipped with a plastic shower cap that is recommended to be put on detector when vacuuming!!! Design flaw fixed by shower cap??? Known Poor quality?? Rona does not support their customers nor do they stand behind what they sell.
