Save-On Foods (Overwaitea)
Unfair treatment of immigrant employees

A department manager began systematically stripping the immigrant employees in her department of their hours, then gave them to her "Canadian" employees. When on of the immigrant employees reported this to the union and received a judgment in her favor, the department manager (assisted by the store manager) began a systematic program of finding fault with the immigrant employee in order to have grounds to dismiss her. In one instance, she was accused of taking slightly more than ten minutes on break and of leaving work five minutes early. This assertion was supposedly captured on camera. When the employee objected that her co-worker, one of the "Canadians" working in the department, regularly left as much as an hour early but always indicated her time of leaving as the normal end of shift, she was told that management was assessing these things on a "case by case" basis. I assume that is Canadian polite euphemism for blatant favoritism and exercise of prejudice. This employee has now been threatened with loss of her job if there are any further infractions. Given the hair-splitting being done here, she will be lucky to last another day or two. I have witnessed some of this and been told of the rest. It is nothing but the exercise of ignorant bigotry and prejudice on the part of the "white Canadians" involved.
