I rented a cottage from the above people/company for a price of $1000 and $400 damage deposit.
At the end of the weekend when I had spoke with the Randy and Carolyn Seychuck (the owners) originally they had done the walk through inspection that night and they went through their checklist and indicated that everything was ok inside the cottage except for 1 hour of a $20/hour in "miscellaneous cleaning" that Carolyn had to perform. And that anything that they found outside in the daylight they would let us know about the next day.
The next day they Randy informed us that there was something lodged in the pipe of the hot tub and that he could most likely remove it himself. Too add to it The next day he confirmed over the phone to me that there was no damage to the tub and it wasn't an issue.
As of the following (Thursday May 24, 2007) he had added a number of things to the work he claims he had to, verbally to me, and they are as follows:
a) 3 hours of servicing to the tub @ 50.00 per hour (after he told me in person a witness he charges only $20/hour for labour); after I told him not to attempt to fix it himself since we can't verify the hours he put in; and that I would rather send my guy from Huronia pools who I feel is more reputable and is licensed.
b) $127.00 in parts for the tub of which he mentioned nothing of after telling me the tub was fine anyway but has no receipts that I am aware for the pieces.
c) hour of labour to fix a metal table he claims was broken but upon initial inspection was fine.
d) hour of labour to clean the BBQ which we scrubbed completely before we left and I witnessed
e) He claims Carolyn needed 2 hours to clean after confirming it would be only one at most, and clearly was one to anyone who witnessed the state of the place - immaculate.
f) 1 hour to clean paper off the beach from fireworks and rake it??? Even though I picked it all up and put them in bag right after, and yes I had a flashlight when I did it.
g) Time to clean up beer bottles of which I offered to take somewhere 3 times and he asked me to leave them for the scouts but now says the scouts aren't coming till June and we were liable.
This man is completely unreasonable and keeps changing stories and we all had a strong suspicion after the inspection that no matter what we did he would have found a way too keep the money for the $400 deposit which they would only accept cash for, it is clear that's all they care about is money (as he made clear many times) and have no ethics whatsoever.
I refuse to speak with that family again due to their rudeness and lack of cooperation in settling the matter. and now am taking the necessary steps to make sure he doesn't get away Scott free with taking advantage of honest people. I tried my best to come to a fair and equitable agreement but it didn't work.
Additionally when I requested receipts for labour, parts and their cottage rental he hung up the phone on me.
To boot the two who owned the cottage did nothing but come over to our cottage, drunk half the time, and intrude on our private time. So that's what we got for $1000 rental and $400 deposit.
