I recently received a phone call that sounded too good to be true, so right away I was hesitant. They told me that since my income from this last year was less than my cost of living I was approved for a $4, 500.00 grant from the federal government. The gentleman over the phone told me that this money was not anything that would need to be paid back nor was it taxable. He said that all I had to do was fill out a survey that would be sent to my home. I told him that sounded great.

He then verified my name and mailing address. This is when I started to become more cautious since he told me that he had been given my info from the federal government but when he confirmed my last name he only gave me the last part of it.

Since my husbands name is hyphenated when I changed my name after our marriage I had to take on both of his last names, if this company truly had gotten my info from the government they would have know both of my last names.

The gentleman over the phone then proceeded to ask me about my bank info and told me that in order to receive the promised grant I would have to give them $350.00 for processing fees. Answer me this; If they knew that my last years income was less than my cost of living how would I be able to afford $350.00 processing fee?

I told him that I was not comfortable giving my bank account number over the phone since I had no way of verifying that this was a legitimate offer. I told him to send me the paperwork so that I could review it myself and then I would give them my bank info. He insisted that it was just to verify that I did have a bank account.

Once he realized that I was adamant about not giving that info over the phone he hung up on me. I tried to call the number back but all I got was a generic vmail box. I then looked up the company on the BBB website and found there was no company found under the name of American Standard Financial in the U.S. and the listing that they did have was in Canada and was labeled as "Foreign Lotteries". Hardly a company that I believe would be working for our federal government.
