Received a letter dated 12/24/08 from Libbey Corp. Financials, Payment Disbursement Centre. It reads: RE: Store Promo
The letter claims I was among 31 persons selected as winners of a pool of money ($320, 000.00) and that I will be awarded the lump sum of $10, 000.00 as my share. Enclosed in the letter is an authentic looking check for the amount of $1, 850.75. The letter claims the enclosed check is for the amount of $2, 950.00.
The letter states that a temporary hold is on the check until a claims representative, Mr. Scott Freeman is contacted at 1 (416)-732-0871.
Instead of contacting Mr. Freeman, I googled the Chain-Stores Giveback Promo and was linked to this site. After reading other posts, I had my authentic-looking check examined by the bank it was drawn on (JPMorgan Chase Bank N.A.) Bank officials said there is an actual account, but that this authentic looking check from Libbey was fraudulent. They say this fraud is already under investigation.
There is more info available at Answers.com under National Store Promo number T46273601. Same scheme, also based in Ontario but with different names and contact numbers. The fake check in this scheme was drawn on Coamerica Bank.
As near as I can figure out, the scammers want you to try and deposit this check to your account ao that they can get a copy of your information (bank account # and routing info from your bank when they attempt to cash the check and it is rejected.
Don't fall for it! Do not try to deposit the check. If you like, take the check to the bank it was drawn on and ask them to verify its authenticity.
I don't know how these scammers got my name and address. Please be wary of anything that comes as something for nothing. Sadly these only exist in fairytales.
