Liberty Financial Inc
2008 North American Sweepstakes Lottery

My wife received a check and letter from the above company. I'm glad I took the time to Google this, as I see this is a scam.

The letter claims (#CA/TD-0551) that she is the winner of $125, 000 USD via a lottery ticket with winning numbers and her name attached to it. It also states that the enclosed check for $4, 980 USD is the initial payout, and that it should be used to pay the applicable taxes, $3, 980 USD.

The letter says that these taxes should be paid via "Moneygram" or "Western Union", but does not mention to whom this payment should be made. It then tells the reader to contact Mr. Patrick Smith at the above number for "further clarification and instructions", mentioning to keep quiet about this until all winnings are received.

The so-called authorized signature was Bill E-something while under that was typed Ms. Julia Clark (Promotion Manager).

This check looks very real, but is drawn on the Union Pacific Railroad, 1400 Douglas St, Omaha NE 68179, Payable Through U.S. Bank N.A., Miamisburg OH, bank number 56-503/422, showing no affiliation to the Canadian company. It comes complete with magnetic ink numbers at the bottom.

I found it curious that the account number typed in at the bottom had 1 extra digit in it compared to my own bank account number.

When I Googled the Lottery I got nothing but Scam Report Sites. I hope this information is useful to any/all concerned parties. This information shall be given to the proper authorities.
