I receive a letter in the mail along with a check for $3800.00.it said this was a partial of my winnings of $38000.00

I received a letter in the mail stating i had won $38000.00 in a sweepstakes lottery for readers digest. attached to the letter was a check for $3800.00.
the letter said i needed to cash this check and claim by prize by 02/02/08. i received the letter on 01/26/08.
i did not remember entering any sweepstakes so i was very unsure about this whole thing. when i googled the company name, i discovered it was all a scam!! these things need to stop!!!
