I got a $4, 610 check in the mail today, was hoping it was a scholarship... I'm thinking it's a scam

I got a check in the mail today for $4, 610 saying that I won a Compensation Lottery Draw A for stores in Canada, and if I use the check to pay the Non- Resident Government Service Tax then I would receive $250, 000. My first instinct was that this was a scam, but the check looks just like a check you'd receive from work etc...

I researched the business on the actual check and it seemed to be completely legitimate but after researching the company on the letterhead it seems that this is a scam. I'm only a senior in high school so I'm wondering how I even got in the midst of this type of thing, but my dad said that the minute you deposit this check in your account they tap into your account information and just totally ruin it or just even mess it all up. I'm glad I found this site so I didn't attempt this.
