Sweepstakes fraud

My Mother received a check and letter from Readers Digest Clearing House.

She no longer had an account so I deposited the check in my account after confirming with the bank that the check was legitimate. That was today. I just read online that no sweepstakes requires you to cash a check, then use those funds to pay fees to release the winnings.

I am concerned now that I should not have deposited that check for my Mother so I will just not call the company back. Some other complaints have stated that the check may be legitimate at first and later be fraud. I of course will not touch those funds as I will be responsible for it as a fraud.
