I received a letter with no return address from Canada. After opening, there was a check for $3766.44 drawn off of Chase Bank (JP Morgan Chase) out of Florida. The letter states I am the 3rd prize winner in their sweepstakes.
The check was to pay the international taxes up front. My prize was $100, 000 and I called to see what this really entailed. The man wanted none of my information, but my reference number and name. He was adment that I cash the check and call him back to get the details on how receive the remainder of my winnings.
I told him I thought this was a scam and he was very smooth in his delivery and even kept using the "you trust your bank don't you" approach. "If they cash the check then everything is ok, right." Well, no because we all know that they will cash it off your funds in your account before it clears and then when the check is deemed fraudulent you are responsible for the funds you withdrew from your account. He wanted the money wired to him which is probably the dumbest thing you could do because you will never see that money again.
The letter advises not to act on this notice until speaking to a claim agent (Brian Anderson) on how to claim winnings. I am glad I figured this guy out quickly. Nonetheless, if I had done what he wanted I would be out a lot of money right now.
Finally, I drove to the closest Chase Bank in New Jersey to see if this was for real. I explaine dto the bank manager what I receieved and they immediately informed me the check was fraudulent an dthat they would nee dto keep it. I had no propblem with this and had a copy made for my records. They also copied my original letter so they could address this immediately. I hope they catch those bastards because someone will defineitly get caught by this if they don't know the system.
