I recently responded to a job offer on Craiglist. I received the following reply to my resume via email:

"The job is pretty straight forward. You will be answering the phone, scheduling meetings, and running companyerrands, but we really need someone to answer the phone. When runningerrands you will be provided with a company credit card. Due to bad experiences with this in the past, before we can send youan application, we need you to get a credit check. We prefer you use https://Nationalcreditreport.notlong.com to obtainthis information. It's a well known and trusted company which will doit for free. When you submit your information they will send youyour credit check. You can email us your credit check report or printit and save it for an interview. We have full and part time positions available. Send me your scheduleand how many hours per week you plan on working. Looking forward toyour response! Sincerely, Evelyn Stuckemeyer"

A little leary, I clicked the link and it took me to a website marketing a gift of laptops, teddy bears, etc. I also copy and pasted the link into my web browser, to the same end.

I have filled out credit check requests for jobs before, but this is usually done as a final step before the job offer. I have worked with large sums of cash, and my credit report is clean, so I have no problem doing this.

I looked up the name of the person who responded to my email, and found repeated posts on Craigslist - in cities all over North America. All of which had been flagged for removal. I do not understand how I can run company errands and answer phones for a company that doesn't appear to have an office in town.

I replied to the email stating that I would be happy to fill out a credit check request after a satisfactory interview, and received no reply.

I would like to know more about this company, and what it is they are trying to do. I am glad I know not to enter ANY personal information into unknown internet sites. It isn't fair to prey on unemployed people who are trying to find honest work.
