Negative Contract Renewals

This complaint pertains to dealings with Direct Energy and their contract renewal process. I was surprised when I received a higher than normal natural gas bill from Enbridge recently. I was then appalled to learn that the price Direct Energy was charging to supply the gas was 3 times the actual cost. What really got me though... was that this sleazy practice is perfectly legal.

I understand that it is my responsibility as a consumer to read the contract before I sign, but 5 years ago the price was right and didn't feel it was necessary. It should not be legal for them to renew a contract this way. When people think of a contract they think they have to sign to get into it not sign to get out. I cannot fathom how a company that is supposed to be regulated by the Ontario Energy Board can get away with this. They are so quick to accuse their competitors of shody practices that they have been fined for doing themselves. I am at my wits end trying to get out of not one... but 4 contracts. How can they renew a contract without a contract. I have had negative experiences on 4 separate accounts with Direct Energy (2 residential and 2 commercial). I am a small business owner who has been badly hit by the collapse of the US economy (were exporters) and now I have to pay thousands of dollars to get out of contracts I didn't want into.

Honestly... I don't know who is worse Direct Energy for their practices or the Ontario Energy Board for allowing them to do business this way.
