Canadel Furniture
Buyer Beware Amatuer furniture finish on custom dining table and chairs

At the recommendation of my interior designers I chose Canadel Furniture as the source for my new dining table and chairs. I was assured by several different stores that Canadel produces the highest quality furniture with the very best finish available in the industry.

With that "quality" in mind I went to Dinette Showcase in Milwaukee and placed an order for the table and chairs on October 25, 2008, at which time I gave them a downpayment of $900.00. The expected delivery date was 6 to 8 weeks. According to the men who delivered the table and charis, the set was actually at Dinette Showcase a week or two before it was delivered to our home. The set was delivered on December 8, 2008 and since I had previously arranged for interest free financing, the balance of $1, 897 owing on the set was charged to this new card issued specifically for futniture by CITI Financial retail services.

So now the aggravation begins. After inspecting the chairs in my home I noticed definite horizontal lines on the vertical posts of the chair back. These horizontal lines appeared in random locations on the chair posts. They are not variations in wood types, glue joints or anything else they want to call it. In addition there were areas where it appears that the finish had dripped. As for the table, the day after it was delivered I sat down and noticed that there was a gap in the center of the table which sunlight was shining through. In addition the face of the apron was rough and not finished properly.

I contacted Dinette Showcase and they basically told me I must be looking the set over with a magnifying glass but they would send out their furniture repairman on Saturday the 13th of December. The repairman came and said that he couldn't do anything to fix these problems but I was welcome to call the store and voice my displeasure.

The store owner said we now have to get the manufacturers rep involved and the rep will call me on Monday the 15th. The rep, not even having seen the dining set, tells me that there can't possibly be a problem with the finish, stain or construction. He stated that their inspection does not involve actually running a hand over the finish to check for irregularities. When I spend nearly $3000.00 for "new" furniture I expect better quality than this. I do not expect that the furniture will need to be "repaired".

Both the store owner and the manufacturers rep told me that since this is a custom order and they now have my money, they will not take it back and I will just have to live with it.

Obviously price is no guarantee of quality.
