I am the owner of a Vermont Castings Vigilant Coal II stove. It is now 8 years old and I have replaced the front grill twice. Most recently I bought a new one for $30 and change, then ordered another one because they seem to be lasting shorter and shorter periods of use.
When I went to order another grill from my Vermont Castings dealer, the lady warned me that they had had some rather sharp price increases... offered to call me back if it was exorbitant. Minutes later, after she called CFM to inquire, she did, and told me that the price of this part had DOUBLED, TO OVER SIXTY DOLLARS. She was as put-out as I was.
I called CFM, in Ontario to inquire why a part would increase over 100% in cost, and the lower-level manager I got just gave me mumbled excuses, not a single one that offered a reasonable explanation. It became obvious that they just decided to make more money on parts... that's all.
So, those of us who find themselves stuck with their products can now expect to pay ridiculous prices whenever we need a part from now on.
Way to go CFM.
