Smells like fumes, very strong

My husband purchased Polo Cologne a year ago NOV> and two months before that it started smelling like fumes very strong. I was told it should be good for at least 2 years. He has been using Polo for many years and this is the first time this has ever happened, could the date maybe have run out?
