I received a letter in the mail from TD Financial, Inc. stating that I was one of the winners in the second category of Sweepstake and Lottery Draw held on April 1, 2008.
Since I am a single mom of two with a son entering college this fall I almost fell for this scam. At first I thought it might really be something to it. The check they sent me appeared to be a real check. I thought I had hit the jackpot! I really needed the money right now, struggling to make ends meet with no child support and a low income.
I immediately tried to contact my "assigned claims agent", Linda Smith or Bruce Morgan. I called over and over again and never got an answer.
The letter advised me that the check enclosed in the amount of $4950.00 USD was to help me pay the Non Resident Government Service Tax in the amount of $3700.00. It failed to mention what I was supposed to do with the remaining $1250.00. The check was from Mike Carter Construction, Inc. from Braydenton, Florida. How would this company be associated with TD Financial form Canada??? DUH?! SCAM FRAUD!!??
I knew it was too good to be true. Thank God I didn't try to cash or deposit this check before I researched it on the Internet. Somebody please HELP put a STOP to this scam.
