Asked for payment to receive a cheque Toronto Ontario

There are many reports posted on the internet regarding this company who seem to target older people and ask for payment before they can receive a cheque of a considerable sum. My Mother who is 84, received such mail just before Christmas asking for payment within the next 7 days in order to receive a cheque in the sum of 9000. When I saw this mail I searched the internet and advised her not to send any money as it is obviously a hoax.
