I installed Regcure software and ran the program. Regcure stated it found 17700 problems to fix. I selected the fix option and restarted my computer. I then spent the next 6 hrs trying and finally getting my computer in its previous working condition. The restore option provided by the Regcure software did nothing to restore my computer to its prior operating condition and I found no information of use on their support site.
Thank God I created a system restore point before clicking the fix button. But even though I had created a restore point, I had to boot my PC using my OS Install CD to run the system restore process as I could not get any programs, what few of them were left after the cleaning, to work.
