I received two cashier checks in the mail totalling $75, 000 as a result of being a winner in a sweepstakes drawn from the Yellow Pages database.
I immediatley thought this was weird due to a few facts... 1) My telephone number/name isn't listed, 2) The telephone numbers on the letter were outside the U.S., 3) the phone number on the checks (from Provident Bank) was bogus. I then got online and did some more research... and this is what I discovered.
1) The phone numbers on the letter traced back to Canada
2) There's a Provident Bank in Suffern, NY (did an address search)
3) Montebello is a city in Quebec
Yes, it would've been nice to be debt free and a home owner but safety first folks. As we always hear, "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is". I hope anyone else that receives this letter do their homework before running to their bank and depositing these checks into their accounts. And I also hope that these scam artists are caught and justice served. Not everyone has the internet to research things and it'll be a ashame for one to become a victim of this nonsense.
