I received a letter in a non descript white envelope with no return address, but across a Canadian stamp was the phrase "Supprt Mental Health". Curious, I open the envelope and find a "Winning Final Notification" along with a check in the amount of $4890.00, dated 10/27/2008.
The letter contains a claim number and the following verbiage: "We are please to inform you that you are one of the declared winners of the SHOPPERS SWEEPSTAKES held on September 5th, 2008 in the 2nd category...
We have made many unsuccessful attempts to contact you regarding this winning. You are therefore entitled to the sum of $250, 000.00 US DOLLARS. This is from total prize money of $5 Million US Dollars that was shared and presented among the other 20 declared winners. Please note that all participants were selected through a random computer ballot system from over 50, 000 names.
...To expedite the processing enclosed is the check of $4890.00 US dollars which has been deducted from your winning. The sole purpose of this check is for the payment of applicable Government Taxes on your big winnings. The tax amoung is $2895.00 US DOLLARS... to be paid MONEYGRAM.
Please do not attempt to use this check until you call."
The check is made on Peoples Heritage Savings Bank in Portland Maine. It appears to be legal but the whole thing is bogus. I recalled reading somewhere that all REAL sweepstakes notices should come certified mail, requiring a signature. I was surprised to open a letter and find a check for $4890.00 which would have been a blessing. BUT, something just didn't seem right about this.
So, I began to try to search the company out on the web. That's when I ran across your site. Thanks for being here to alert us of the SCAMS and TRICKS out there!
