Devry
Promices of success but no delivery and classes far below what I expected

The Devry Institute of technology. Their commercials are always saying things like go where employers go and have their students saying things like I am going to be a systems analyst or I will work in the field of programming. But in reality they dont deliver.

Devry advertises itself primarily as an IT school. These days IT is doing very poorly. Its not uncommon to hear a story of an IT person with a multitude of skills and years of experience to be laid off and to be unable to get back into the field, even after months or in a lot of cases YEARS of searching. A lot of these people have been forced to seek employment elsewhere or go back to school for training in other fields.

The entry-level people are another group of people having problems in IT. I am in this group. Like a lot of people who were children in the 80s, I grew up in a world where computers had existed for a while but were still hard enough to use that people that knew how to use them were called nerds and you really couldnt do a whole lot with them. Around 10 years ago (give or take, basically the early 90s) when we first started hearing about the information superhiway (which would become the internet as we know it today) and when computer games were starting to be cool and other things were happening, suddenly being good with and having a computer was cool. Suddenly everyone wanted a computer and wanted on the net. Its not surprising that around this time, having a career in computers was considered cool and everyone wanted in. It wasnt long before the . com boom happened and everyone was telling all the teens and young adults who were unsure what they wanted to do in life to go into computers.

Unfortunately, it wasnt meant to last and starting in late 2000 / early 2001 (possibly earlier) the .com boom became the .com bust and suddenly computer (IT) companies all over the place were going bankrupt and people were getting laid off. It was almost surreal how one month IT jobs were everywhere and the next the industry was in turmoil. This is where we lay now, IT is still in turmoil and jobs are very hard to come by. Which leads to the reason for my complaint.

Devry is acting as if none of this is happening and is going on like IT is doing great. They say that their students are securing employment in IT very quickly and that their classes are the best out there. Yet from what I hear, a lot of their graduates are having nothing but problems in the 'job hunt'

The truth is that a Devry education is very expensive but you do not get what you are paying for. Their equipment is outdated and the software they are teaching is outdated. In this day and age you need to stay current to be succeed in IT. You need to have up to date skills and qualifications, and you most likley are not going to get that from Devry.

Now, I am a reasonable guy. I understand that no education will guarantee you success and will get you a job handed to you on a silver platter. I understand that it doesnt work that way. Unfortunately Devry tries to trick you into thinking that it does. I took a part-time course at Devry, thinking that which it wouldnt guarantee me a job; it would at least make my resume look much better when an employer saw Devry on it. I thought the course was going to be amazing. For an 8-month class that was 2 nights a week and 4 classes, I paid as much as I could have paid for a year in a community college course. In retrospect I should have gone to a local community college and taken one of their fasts learning courses (the exact name escapes at the moment, but its one of those courses where you have go part time but its 3 days or nights a week and you learn as much in one 3 hour class that youd normally learn in 3-4 normal classes).
