Received letter dated 3/10/07, signed by John Garfield, Promotions Manager. Advised that I was one of winners of Sweepstake Draw held Feb 15, 2007. Claim number SEF-019-4526-RF. Receipt with serial number 3874501 drew lucky winning numbers 22-87-76-44-24. Advised me to contact assigned claims agent Larry Smith at 1-604-724-3874.
Check for $4, 900 US was enclosed "... which you will use to pay for the nonresident government tax (GST) payable to your tax agent by MONEYGRAM as stated below." Tax Amonut $2, 980.00 USD "Payment method: Money gram (located in every WALL MART store)"
Per letter "do not act on this notice unitl you contact your tax agent who will advice you on how to claim your winnings. Tax Agent: Laura Jones 224 5th Ave. St Johns, NF Canada A1B3C5."
Web search for ABC Financial led us to usaconsumercomplaints.com, so we knew we shouldn't cash the check.
However, I contacted Larry, inquiring for my "client" who received the letter. Larry asked if I was an attorney (I said no) and then he asked me to call back tomorrow.
