I joined the Pen Centre location in April, 2004. It was great, very exciting. I felt I received a fabulous dealthe first 3 months were free, I was feeling better after a couple of workouts, and I was getting out of the house for some ME time. Well, that soon came to an end.
I was laid off due to lack of work right before Christmas. I was over 8 months into my contract and I knew that a contract could not be cancelled but I had to try. I called the Pen Centre location and spoke to the manager. I explained my situation and asked if there was anything they could do for me as I could not make the monthly payments and since the contract was going to be up in a few months.
Well, the manager chuckled a bit and told me that I still have quite a ways to go. Not knowing what she meant, I asked again if there was anything they could do. She told me that she could put the membership on hold but I would still have to make the payments. How much sense does hat make??
Then she informed me that my contract wasn't up until August. Huh??? When I signed the contract and got the first 3 months free, little did I know that 3 months was not included in the 12 month contract. The contract is not up until 12 payments have been made. So, the contract was actually a little over 15 months! I was pretty upset. She just left it at that!!
I called back to see if I could get the number or address for the Head Office. She said they can't give out that information!! How convenient for them. Instead they gave me the number for the manager at Premier on Bunting Road. I spoke to him and he asked me to come in with the contract so that he could take a look at it. I felt hopeful.
My appointment was at 4pm. It was 4:40 by the time he came to get me. Oops, the girl at the desk forgot to tell him!!! Finally, we went into his office, sat down and I explained my situation. He was sympathetic with me but couldn't do anything, his hands are tied.
I told him no one ever told me that the first 3 months were not included in the contract. Then he said they should have put those free 3 months at the end of the contract. I asked him if he could maybe contact the Head Office and try to fix this. He said they probably wouldn't listen to him so he didn't even attempt to help me. He told me that everyone has their special circumstances and the contract is a legal document. I gave up and signed the cancellation for August, 2005.
I am so very disgusted that no one could have been bothered to try to help me out and I know that I am not the only one. And as for the Head Office, it is not morally acceptable that your own clients, (you know the ones who pay you hundreds of dollars for your services) cannot contact you with their concerns!! Any honorable company would ensure that their clients could get a hold of them with any comment or concerns!!
