I received a letter on July 14, 2007 stating I had won a lottery which included a Bahamas cruise and lump sum payment of $50, 000. A cashiers check in the amount of $3, 950 was included stating it was to "... pay for the taxes to further finalize your claim." The letter also stated "This amount is an advance fee for the processing and non residential tax fees, which will be deducted from your total winning sum with the balance $46, 050.00 paid out to you upon paying your prcessing and tax clearance fee."
The check had Linn Area Credit Union letter head on it, which is located in Cedar Rapids, IA. I called the bank to see if this check was for real and was informed that Nationalwide Financial had indeed stole and/or re-created copies of Cashiers checks from this bank. The checks are absolutely 100% fraudulent. The company gets you to cash them then the check bounces and you are out of luck, you would lose the $3, 950. Please be aware of this scam and I hope nobody has fallen for it already!!!
