Large tracts of land presently destined for clear cutting can be purchased and slowly transformed into living working forests through a combination of low impact single tree selection ecoforestry and a minimal degree of housing, all controlled by conservation covenants. ECO Initiatives Incorporated was established to promote core Ecoforestry values, support Community development and provide an Opportunity for ecologically responsible interests. Our goal is to: .... - demonstrate that it is possible to live as a community with limited ecoforestry/residential development in a productive and healthy forest that consciously protects fragile areas of habitat .... - create a global model of forest land use that could save existing plant and animal habitat and reinvigorate local economies through small communities living in harmony with the land. The Model Our approach is based upon the belief that simple land preservation, in the form of parks or strict zero-impact covenants, restricts participation in these ventures to governments and select groups of wealthy patrons. While we applaud the efforts of these individuals, groups and foundations, we believe that unless human beings learn to live as an organically integrated part of the ecosystem, we will never turn the corner on sustainablility. We also believe that a significant number of people would welcome the opportunity to participate in environmental stewardship if an affordable model could be provided. Our model is not intended for wilderness areas or extremely fragile habitat, which may require complete preservation. We are directing our efforts toward forested lands that are presently in jeopardy of being devastated by conventional logging. We believe that balancing the needs of nature with single tree selection forestry and a small residential component is the most viable way of expanding areas of protected forests while still gaining wood from eco friendly sources. Our residential development activities, roads included, are designed for minimal footprints. Potential lot sites are carefully studied to ensure that the smallest amount of damage to habitat will occur. Only the minimum number of residential sites, 1 per 10 acres, is contemplated and the sale costs of developed sites is structured to ensure that people with a range of incomes can participate. The house sites are arranged so that the majority of land is left as open forest.
