Nuu-chah-nulth artist, Art Charlie was born in Tofino, B.C. He began carving at the age of 13 with the assistance of his grandfather Joshua Jumbo. Upon completing high school and a teacher s aide certificate from the University of Victoria, Art continued his art work with the late Rodney Thomas, Coast Salish carver. Art s work includes wall plaques, replica paddles, jewelry boxes, miniature masks and cribbage boards. His carving style is a mixture of influences; Nuu-chah-Nulth, Coast Salish, and Haida. Art s favourite subjects to portray are the humming bird, raven/clam/first man, whales and the wolf and moon - his family crest. Art is the father of nine and grandfather of eleven, he spends the spring and summer months carving on the lower causeway of Victoria s Inner Harbour. An internationally known artist, Art s work can be found in private homes and collections world wide.
