When SFU Surrey started work on their new facility at Central City, they were looking for a design that would complement the institution s focus on interdisciplinary applied sciences and research in information networking and multimedia, technology-mediated learning, computer games, e-business, knowledge management, bioinformatics, intelligent systems and optimization, visualization, digital audio signal processing, computer music, physical modeling, and musical acoustics. Acumen Engineering created a design that would allow the campus to be on the leading edge of educational technology and provide years of use. The Galleria 3 and Podium phases of the campus construction plan were composed of 24 classrooms, lecture theatres, and seminar rooms based around 8 room designs. PJS Systems Incorporated was responsible for the installation and integration of the rooms which would allow campus administrators to provide an advanced and innovative environment for learning. Each room is based around a Crestron control system which allows the lecturer to control the lighting, drapes, and A/V components in the room from a single point. Multimedia presentations are projected using Sanyo projectors routed through a Kramer switcher/scaler and audio sent out using ClearOne and Biamp processors and amplifiers. All audio and video streams are being supported using Extron components. The Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre, described as a world-class venue for every type of entertainment, consists of a 750 seat proscenium arch theatre with orchestra and balcony seating, plus an additional "black box" space with the potential of seating 100 people. Because flexibility in the sound system design was a key feature, the system was designed in a way that allowed both the main auditorium and the Marie Fleming Hall to be serviced from a unified sound system. The main auditorium was designed in such a way that the mixing console could be operated from the sound booth, or easily relocated to the main floor, so that the ideal mix position could be used for any event. Obtaining the large hall sound required for a "world-class venue" feel in a space as small as 750 seats created the need for some creative acoustics in addition to a high quality sound system. Traditionally acoustics are achieved through wall and ceiling finishes, and any change in acoustics would have to be done with movable panels or drapes to try and achieve the desired effect.
