Workshop Objective To facilitate exchange of the latest information among scientists from academia, governmental agencies and industry engaged in different aspects of research in the field of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in the environment. Workshop Goals: Background BFR 2004 is the third in a series of International Workshops on Brominated Flame Retardants. The First International Workshop was held at Skokloster, Sweden in 1989. About 50 people from research institutes, industry and regulatory agencies working in this field participated and presented the state-of-the-science at that point in time. Participation grew to over 200 at the Second International Workshop on BFRs, held at the University of Stockholm, Sweden in 2001. Participants and organizers at this workshop recognized that the growing interest in BFRs would undoubtedly merit further international workshops and decided to hold the third workshop on BFRs in Toronto in 2004. Since 2001 there has been a tremendous increase in the number of publications on BFRs in the environment, indicating that the interest in BFRs as global environmental pollutants continues to grow. More information on the levels and trends of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs, a sub-class of BFRs) in the environment is becoming available. However, there continues to be a lack of information on distribution and temporal trends for other BFRs. This challenges environmental agencies responsible for pursuing risk assessments. Workshop content and organization The workshop will consist of six consecutive sessions, allowing participants to attend all of the presentations over the course of the 3-day workshop. Each session will begin with an invited keynote presentation which will overview the session topic. Oral presentations (20min) and poster presentations will be selected from the abstracts submitted. Time will be alotted for questions and comments from the workshop participants. The meeting will include a roundtable discussion to overview some of the issues raised at the workshop and to identify pertinent research questions and information gaps. Selected contributions from this workshop will be published in a peer-reviewed journal. The workshop includes presentations on all different brominated flame-retardants. Topics to be discussed will include levels in the environment and the workplace, spatial and temporal trends, sources, transport mechanisms and pathways, toxicology, ecotoxicology, environmental fate and modeling, human and environmental exposure. For a PDF of the full workshop agenda Workshop Agenda Venue The workshop will be held at the St. George Campus of the University of Toronto in downtown Toronto. The Isabel Bader Theatre is a modern meeting facility within walking distance of hotels, restaurants, and many of the sightseeing attractions of Canada s largest city. Language The workshop language will be English. Accommodation A wide range of hotels of different categories, as well as university residences will be available. Registration Fees (in $CDN, exchange rate $1CDN=0.756$US=0.592 Euros as of February 18, 2004) The registration fee for full time participants is $350 and $150 for students before April 15, 2004; $400 for full time participant and $200 for student after Aril 15, 2004. Registration includes access to the workshop venue, workshop proceedings, lunches, opening reception (Sunday June 6, 2004), and refreshments during breaks. Thank you for visiting BFR 2004.
