BioComp Instruments has focused on the development, manufacture and sale of scientific instruments used in biomedical research. The Company was started in 1985 by Dr. David Coombs, a professor of molecular biology at the University of New Brunswick , when he discovered a rapid new way to generate density gradients for use in the ultracentrifuge. With the award of the patent covering this invention, Dr. Coombs then had patented devices at both ends of the use of gradients; a gradient former and a gradient fractionator, the latter of which he had developed as a graduate student at UCLA. The development of the Gradient Master was completed in 1986 and it has sold to hundreds of researchers all over the world. The Gradient Mate, a simpler device is also now available. The Gradient Fractionator existed in various prototype forms until early 1995 when the first finished copy was shipped. It and Gradient Master now work together to deliver the most accurate and sensitive gradient analysis available. We have dubbed the technique High Resolution Density Gradient Analysis or HRDGA for short. Dr. Norman Watts, then a Ph.D. student in Dr. Coombs lab, adapted the Gradient Master to perform roller blot development. With only minor software and hardware changes, the blotting line was launched. Two more patents have issued to cover these improvements which are unique in using a magnetic film to locate and retain tube holders or blotting bottles on a rotating steel plate...
