Right: Monica Tonna Barthet "If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven" Mt 19:21 Monica Tonna Barthet, who turns 70 in January, has sold all her worldly possessions and used the proceeds to set up a home for sick street children in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She sold her home in Gharghur, her car, her collection of antiques and other possessions and used the money to buy land and to pay for the construction of the home. Once the home is fully paid by March, she would have used up all her money and her only possession would be happiness. Although as a young girl she had wanted to visit Africa, she did not know then what missionary work was all about. As a young woman, Ms Tonna Barthet loved life and lived it to the full. She had a good job with the United Nations and although she had always wanted to do voluntary work, little did she dream then that, in time, Ethiopia would become her home. Her first taste of missionary work was caring for a blind woman while working for the UN in Geneva. Later she did some work in a hospital but she started thinking about missionary work seriously after a trip to Tibet. On the way there she had stopped in India and met Mother Teresa, who had invited Ms Tonna Barthet to become a contemplative (a religious lay person). Some years later, when she was all set to go on a missionary trip to South America, she was asked to change her plans and go to Ethiopia instead. This was in 2001 and she has not looked back since. The first trip was only a few months long, but soon after returning to Malta, she was back in Ethiopia. Eventually she obtained a residence permit and now only comes to Malta for holidays. Ms Tonna Barthet has built the children s home in Addis Ababaand has received a support letter from the Kebena Kidane Mihret Catholic Church. She bought the land earlier this year, construction started soon after and the home should hopefully take its first children in March. The primary objective of the Angels Children s Home is to provide care and support for around 25 sick street children by creating a nurturing environment where the children can live together as a family. The project will provide them with food, shelter, clothing and medical support together with psychological support and counselling with a view to giving them the chance to experience love, friendship and discipline. The project will mainly target six to 16-year-olds, most of whom will come from the Mother Teresa Missionaries of Charity Sisters Home. They would be children who have been treated at the Mother Teresa Home but have no place to go. Fifteen staff will be employed to run the centre including a project coordinator, a counsellor and a social worker.
