The Nitinat region is jam-packed with natural attractions. Six kilometers (4 miles) north of the Nitinat narrows on the WCT is the beautiful Tsusiat Falls while offshore the open ocean offers whale watching and sports fishing opportunities second to none. Not to be outdone, the adjacent west coast rain forest has some surprises that will leave the viewer awe struck. The Cheewaht Cedar with a circumference of 19 meters (62 ft) is the largest cedar tree in British Columbia, while the nearby Carmanah Walbran Provincial Park is home to the tallest tree in Canada, a Sitka spruce measuring 95 meters (310 ft) tall. The Ditidaht own seventeen Indian Reserves around Nitinat Lake, on the ocean front and the surrounding area, totaling 751 hectares (1,855 acres) - seven of these reserves are within the boundary of the WCT. In addition, in 2008 Ditidaht purchased 126 ha (311 acres) of deeded property in the area and commissioned a study of these properties to assess their physical and tourism market potential and to prepare a business plan for the project with the best potential based on prevailing market conditions. The project identified as having the best potential was for a luxury resort on the choicest of these deeded properties – the one that offers an amazing viewscape of Nitinat Lake and valley. The Nitinat Resort Lodge – with a proposed initial capacity of 20 guests – will cater to the discerning traveler; those who want a guided experience into nature and into the ancient culture of the Ditidaht people. The facility will have the following “longhouse style ” structures and amenities: a main lodge 2,400 square foot in size which includes kitchen/dining/lounge with stone fireplace, ten-300 sq. ft mini longhouse cottages, one 300 sq. ft. reading room, Jacuzzi and two staff cottages. The total estimated project cost is $2.5 million. It is intended the infrastructure and main lodge be configured for expansion to accommodate a final build out of twenty guest cottages.
