This has been a challenging year for us. Our family doctor recommended that Karen have a colonoscopy based on her family history. This was obviously a few years earlier than one would normally have such a thing (with Karen being 29 again, it wasn t supposed to happen for a while). As it turned out, it was a good thing she did have the procedure. In fact the surgeon later mentioned that having had it early probably saved her life. In late June they found a pre-cancerous "mass in her colon that would have to be removed. Long story short, two weeks after that 13 cm s of her colon was removed. That early part of July seemed to fly by like minutes. The remainder of the month took forever. That put quite a damper on our summer plans. The rest of the summer was spent with her recovering from major surgery. She s nearly fully recovered at this point and has been back to exercising. She s still perhaps not 100% but she s certainly very close to that. We are very thankful that it was found when it was and that she s doing fine and her prognosis is good. On a lighter note, you may recall our episode last year with Uncle Buck. He was an over friendly deer that took up residence in our backyard last year leaving piles of black jelly beans all over the place. We ve seen him a couple of times since then. This year for about 3 weeks we had a robin that would continually fly against our windows. Over and over . Sometimes it would wake us up in the mornings. You ve no doubt heard the old British poem: "The North wind doth blow and we shall have snow, And what will poor robin do then, poor thing?" Well, I ll tell you what the robin will do. It will fly against your window repeatedly. Who wants to deal with another winter? The kids have had a good year. Our son started junior high. Where has the time gone? He had to choose options at school this year. To select your options, you rank them in order from 1 to 11 in order of preference (you may not get your top choice). His top picks were pretty typical; computers, industrial arts. One class he didn t want to take was art. Using the finest logic I ve seen, he picked art as his last choice. What made that more interesting was that he chose it as number 11 after ESL, an English as a Second Language class meant for new Canadians, which he picked as number 10. I think he s going to be an engineer. Our daughter is in grade 5. She continues to do ballet and piano. At her school she s been in the handbell choir. She generally enjoys music and art. She has an exquisite level of sarcasm in her humor that makes her Dad proud and horrified all at the same time. In the spring we decided to get away together, just the two of us. Remember that time before you had kids? Neither do we. We went to San Francisco for a few days. While there we rented some bikes and biked from Fisherman s Wharf across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito on the other side. It was windy and cold and we froze (and that s saying something considering the winter we have had) but it was still a lot of fun. So that s it again for this year.
