Rolling into The Good Life Community Bicycle Shop in Eau Claire Market, you re greeted with upbeat music, a friendly wave and an engaged team of volunteers with all the bicycle know-how, support and tools you could possibly need. It s hard to believe that one year ago, this bustling space existed only in Jonny Barrett s mind. A modern-day Neal Cassady, Jonny has laughter in his eyes, boundless energy and an unparalleled passion and commitment to positive social and environmental change. In 2007, recently returned to Calgary from the Global Resource Systems program at the University of British Columbia, Jonny was longing to connect with like-minded individuals. This prompted him to commit to building community right here in his hometown. At the top of his to-do list? Open a non-profit community bike shop. Jonny began to share his idea and quickly realized he was not alone. Response to his inquiries showed a hunger for community, a need for cyclists to connect with one another, and an appetite for positive outlets for environmental and social action. Before long, eighteen interested Calgarians crammed into Jonny s living room to share their visions of a cyclist-friendly, community-minded city. The tool they d use to get there was a bicycle shop open to all, providing resources, support and a gathering point for cyclists and would-be cyclists in Calgary. From that meeting came the core vision that became The Good Life Community Bike Shop. The foundation established, things quickly fell into place. Initial financial support came in the form of a 2008 Young Environmental Stewards (YES) grant from Alberta Ecotrust, designed to support environmental initiatives in Alberta communities. Collaborations sprang up to provide the fledgling project with resources, expertise and a shared venue in Eau Claire Market. Volunteers clamoured to participate and patrons brought bikes in and out steadily. And so The Good Life was born, Calgary s first non-profit community bicycle shop, founded on the tenets of inclusivity, consensus-based decision making, and free access for all to a welcoming space, bicycle repair materials, support, education and inspiration. Asked why he felt compelled to bring this idea to life, Jonny answers playfully, "Well, I like to ride my bike. And I saw positive people and energy everywhere in Calgary just ready to erupt. I just thought, this amazing potential had to be tapped somehow!" In supporting the idealism, energy and passion of Jonny Barrett and visionaries like him, Alberta Ecotrust and the YES Grant Program help to amplify the beat of Alberta s next generation of environmental actors.
