It has been sixty years since J.C. Bakker Nurseries first opened its doors for business. On anniversary years such as this, we like to take the time to reflect on where we have come from and where we are headed; a good reminder of our humble beginnings and just how blessed we really are. Going back to 1949, I doubt my grandfather had any idea how far his initial efforts in starting a nursery with his two sons would go. His choice in occupation was driven by more than just a need to provide for his family. He had the desire to use his knowledge of growing plants to the best of his abilities, which he did, and the nursery flourished. Over the time the love for growing plants carried on, resulting in many great milestones in the nursery industry. At Bakker s we have seen the pioneering of many changes and innovations in the nursery, such as developments in frozen storage techniques, container growing techniques, the use of rooting horomones and mist propagation, the development of an open roof greenhouse structure, and several different pieces of equipment that have changed the way we grow. Our nursery is substantially larger today as is the industry, yet we have not lost our original desire, the joy of doing what we do best with all that we have been given. This however is no guarantee of perfection in production or even success, and looking back with that understanding is what makes celebrating sixty years of growing that much more amazing. For we can plainly see God s hand in this, allowing us to serve Him in this way. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
