For over 50 years, Briggs Bus Lines has played a key role in shaping the student bus transportation industry in Alberta . The idea for the business started back in 1954 when the "one-room" schoolhouses began closing to pave the way for regional schools. When the Belmont School near Edmonton closed it left many families including the Briggs family looking for a way to get to Horse Hill School , the nearest school. Seizing the opportunity, Don and his brother Fred, bought a single bus and secured the contract to provide transportation for a portion of the children who attended the new consolidated school. They called their company, Briggs Bros. Student Transportation Ltd. That one route was the beginning of what would become a tradition in western Canada s school bus industry. Little did the local family realize that the newly created company would eventually grow into Briggs Bus Lines with a bus fleet of over 600 units, complete with a fully licensed bus operator training school, one of the best in Canada. In 1982, Briggs made a strategic decision to expand into bus sales through a new division called Briggs Bus Sales with a Girardin Minibus distributorship. I n 2004, Briggs Bus Sales made the strategic decision to become the western Canadian distributor for IC Corp. and their product line of buses, offering the best selection for customers.
