Big Brothers Big Sisters of PICTOU COUNTY has been creating friendships since 1980. In November 1978, a group of interested citizens formed a steering committee to see if there was a need for a Big Brothers Big Sisters agency in Pictou County. Once a need was established, the organization became a provisional member of the National group, meaning that the local agency could use the Big Brothers Big Sisters name. Funds were raised and a Board of Directors was nominated. The Constitution and the by-laws were prepared, and our agency becamed incorporated on July 9, 1980. In January of 1981 the first Executive Director was hired. On April 30, 1981 the first match was made and on July 29, 1982 our first couple match was made. In 1985 the Child Safety Program was implemented to educate children, parents, and volunteers in child safety. We started out matching Big Brothers with Little Brothers and have grown to include a variety of different programs that serve both boys and girls, including cross gender matching in 1995. In 1997 three new programs were introduced, Kids n Kops, Literacy for Littles and In School Mentoring. On April 17, 1998, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Pictou County opened a satellite office in Antigonish covering Antigonish town and County. We are proud of our achievements and continue to strive to be on the leading edge of the Big Brothers Big Sisters movement in Canada.
