BCR is one of the longest and widest clay tracks in Western Canada and the USA. It is of a mile on the inside and mile on the outside. The track is a high banked oval from bottom to top, the corners are close in height to a two story apartment building! BCR has the capacity to seat over 2000 spectators with an incredible view of the track. With the pit area located on the outside of the track, there is no obstructions for the drivers making the speed of the track very fast! The making of BCR is the dream of one man, George Mercer. Both George and his wife Marj were avid racers in the 1970 s. They belonged to the club S.A.A.R., (Southern Alberta Auto Racers) which raced at the Lethbridge exhibition grounds. The city of Lethbridge eventually turned the track into a horse track and auto racing was no more in Southern Alberta. During the 1980 s, George and Marj continued to race in Calgary and Edmonton until George decided it was time to bring auto racing back home and to his roots. Planning took over a year and with the help of his cousin Lloyd Mercer who provided some of his farmland, George s dream began. With the help of over 50 volunteers from the new local car club which they belonged to, CARA (Chinook Auto Racers Association), in 1990 construction on the new facility began. It took only a few short months to construct the wood bleachers and the safety fences around the wall of the track which you still see today. ...
