A GOOD EXAMPLE OF EVIDENCE-BASED THERAPY IS COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (CBT) Cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT has probably been more thoroughly researched than any other form of psychotherapy and has been demonstrated (based on scientific evidence) to be an effective treatment for depression, anxiety and other disorders. CBT can also be used very effectively with other treatments such as medication and many people benefit from this combined approach. Medication can assist with the physiological side of the problem while CBT helps to improve lifestyle, deal with the causes of depression, address the negative thinking, and develop strategies to help prevent relapse. Dr David Burns is a psychiatrist and an internationally respected authority regarding the treatment of depression and anxiety. In his best-selling text The Feeling Good Handbook he offers this easy-to-understand explanation of CBT: "Although CBT may seem like a complicated name, it has a simple meaning. A cognition is just a fancy name for a thought. If you have ever been very depressed or anxious, you are probably aware that you think of things very negatively when you are down in the dumps. Depressed people also have a tendency to behave in self-defeating ways "¦ you may avoid work, pleasurable activities and other people, for example. CBT can help you change these negative thinking and behavior patterns so you can experience greater happiness, productivity and intimacy." The CBT process begins with at least one and perhaps two assessment sessions in order for the therapist to understand the nature of your problem and to determine (with you) if CBT is the appropriate treatment. During the assessment, the therapist may use questionnaires designed to assess aspects of your current situation as well as the relevant aspects of your history. The therapist will also discuss CBT more fully and will provide an opportunity for all of your questions to be answered. For the therapist, the goal of the assessment is to determine: -Whether or not your specific requirements are a good match for the skills and style of the therapist. From your perspective, the assessment process will help you determine whether or not CBT treatment feels right for you. Once you and the therapist have decided to work together, the emphasis will shift from assessment to therapy. In a CBT session (which typically lasts for 60 minutes) the focus will mostly be on how you think (the cognitive side) and what you do (the behavioral side). A very important thing to realize about CBT is that the most important work takes place by you between therapy sessions. Therefore, CBT session typically end with a plan for action for the coming week(s). The total number of therapy sessions varies greatly from one client to another. However, the terapy process typically ranges from between 6 to 20 sessions.
