February 12, 2010 - 1st Annual Manitoba Ranger Program commences in Northern Manitoba! 1st Annual Manitoba Ranger Program commences in Northern Manitoba! The Opening Ceremony for the first annual Manitoba Ranger Program took place on July 20th at Egg Lake Camp approximately 40 minutes north of The Pas. 14 First Nations youth representing Opaskwayak First Nation, Pukatawagon First Nation, Moose Lake First Nation, Shammattawa First Nation, Oxford House First Nation, York Landing First Nation will be residing in camp for the 5 week program. Outland veteran supervisor, Andrew Sheppard, is leading this inaugural program with a strong 4 person management team. The management team includes Mattagami First Nation (Ontario) born Jonathan Wheesk. Jonathan is a graduate of the Ontario based and Confederation College led, First Nations Natural Resources Youth Employment Program. This is an excellent opportunity for Jon to develop his leadership skills. The goal is that over time, the MRP will produce its own crewleaders- in- training. Outland provides forest renewal and exploration camp services to the program s 2 main industry partners, Tolko Manitoba in The Pas and HudBay Minerals in Flin Flon. The youth will be carrying out specific work projects for both companies. As well, Manitoba Conservation and the Manitoba Forest Fire Program are both contributing with training and awareness sessions. All candidates will receive Emergency Fire Fighter (EFF) certificates during the first week of the program. Manitoba Hydro has a huge impact on natural resource management in northern Manitoba. The program has 2 days planned for interaction with the provincial utility. The MRP will introduce participants to career paths in the natural resources sector. As well rangers (aged 17 to 19) will receive specific employment and skills training which will prepare them for further employment in the sector while they complete their high school and post secondary educations. The program runs from July 19th to August 20th. A closing ceremony will take place at Egg Lake Camp on Saturday, August 20th. For more information contact Dave Bradley at [email protected] « Back
