HISTORY Geoff and Dora Lynn Meakin started Meakin Forest in June of 1971 with a $10,000 loan from Dora Lynn s parents. Dora Lynn continued to teach school which enabled them to put food on the table while Geoff toiled in the bush trying to get the wood contracting business going. As a business up until the late 70 s they barely made it, then in 1980 they were given the opportunity to try their hand at water transportation and log on the upper Montreal River to harvest white pine for Weyerhaeuser Canada. They bought 2 old tugs and a barge and went 22 miles up the river. They logged up there during the summers for the next 9 years, and down in the hardwoods near the Sault during the winters. In 1984, Meakin Forest started a second operation logging for Midway Lumber in Thessalon. This relationship still continues today. At that time the company turned to more spruce, jack pine and poplar harvesting which could be mechanized. This resulted in a larger volume harvested east of Sault Ste. Marie for Midway and the usual diet of hardwood harvest for the various owners of the Sault Ste. Marie Sawmill. It was during the 90 s that Meakin s import/export business was started to take advantage of jack pine harvest volumes available in the State of Michigan in the Upper Peninsula near the village of Newberry. During this period they also started shipping poplar off the crown allocations along the North Shore to a Louisiana Pacific Corp. OSB plant in Newberry. The brokerage still remains a strong part of the business. The company continues to ship a large amount of poplar to Louisiana Pacific Corp. off our their own deeded land harvest and also have a strong purchase program for poplar. A cedar export program has been going on since 2000, again both from their own harvests and purchase wood. The company also has an active hardwood log program, which consists of selling their own deeded harvest hardwood logs to local mills or on the export market. This also involves various grades of round logs, namely sawlogs, veneer logs, and hardwood pulp. In 2000 the company moved to a new location at 900 McNabb Street, Sault Ste. Marie. This new location allowed them to open a much needed equipment repair facility, more office space and a large log yard for sorting, grading and scaling round wood products. It was shortly before the move in 2000 that Meakin Forest reorganized a need and started up a new company Superior Land Management Incorporated This identity was to focus on forestry and harvest opportunities on private land for Meakin Forest. In the autumn of 2002 Superior Land purchased Running Township, a 22,000-acre track of land, some 100 km north east of the Sault. Running Township has volumes of approximately 400,000 m3 of harvestable wood products that can be sold on the open market. In early 2005 Meakin Forest purchased an adjacent portion of land, named McParland Township, which lies north of Running Township but south of the Montreal River with an area of 11,200 acres. This brought the total land holdings in this block to 32,200 acres.
