Dogwood Initiative wants to make British Columbia the global model for sustainable land reform. We are succeeding . We are the leading land reform organization in BC. What is sustainable land reform? Sustainability can be described as "the ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" (JG Nelson). Land reform is the process by which control over a tract of land is transferred to the people who live their and work it, with the aim of all inhabitants prospering far into the future. BC is a special place; full of incredible beauty, diverse ecosystems and vast natural resources. 96% of BC is public land - yet large timber, mining and oil companies control over 88% of that land. Their operations can ravage the environment and impoverish local communities. We want to ensure that BC residents have the right to make their own decisions about how the land they live on is used. Our work enables people to safeguard their communities for their children and their children s children. Our choice is clear: either we allow government and corporations to continue to destroy the province, or we stand up and ensure that land-use decisions are made by those who live on the land. The future of BC—its land, its communities—hangs in the balance. For more about us: Successes Mission & Overview Partners & Supporters Staff and Board Contact Information
