K&C Silviculture Red Deer Operations is a commercial tree seedling nursery which occupies 60 acres of land, 20 kilometers east of Red Deer. The primary facility consists of 18,500 square meters of gutter connected greenhouse. In addition there are five free standing gothic arch style greenhouses. The greenhouses are covered with high grade polyethylene and protected by twin wall polycarbonate sidewalls. The seedlings are grown on a custom designed moveable pallet system to promote maximum root air pruning underneath the blocks. The Red Deer climate is typical of central Alberta and is mediated in the greenhouses through a custom designed, computer controlled environmental system. The system is capable of heating, cooling and humidifying providing a full range of environments to suit each stage of growth. The system also provides alarms should any environmental or security problem arise. Irrigation is provided through overhead traveling booms. The facility has two operational sources of water. The first is via pipeline from the Red Deer River. The second is an on site reservoir which can be used in the event of a temporary disruption in the primary water flow. A diesel generator compensates automatically for any disruption in power. The current growing capacity in the greenhouses based on a 410 styroblock is approximately nine million seedlings. We have the capability to handle individual programs from a few thousand seedlings to programs in the millions. Currently the majority of crops we grow are Lodgepole Pine, White Spruce, Black Spruce and Aspen, but we can grow a number of other species upon request. Mark has been responsible for all logging and forestry activities during his time with Westar, providing an annual cut of 600,000 cubic meters.
