Description of the company

Alberta Pacific Forest Industries Inc.
PO Box 8000, Boyle, Alberta, T0A 0M0, Canada

Since beginning operations in 1993, Alberta-Pacific has prided itself on being a world leader for its forest management practices as well as its economic and social contributions. These efforts were validated in September 2005, when the company received Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification. The certification of 5.5 million hectares (13.6 million acres) of Al-Pac s Forest Management Agreement (FMA) area represents the largest FSC-certified forest in the world. The Athabasca oilsands of Al-Pac s FMA area, (300,000 hectares) was excluded from certification because it is not managed according to the company s ecosystem management approach. FSC is an international organization created in response to concern over global forest sustainability and consumer demand for environmentally and socially responsible wood products. SmartWood, an accredited FSC certifier, assessed Al-Pac against a strict set of criteria guided by the following 10 principles for forest management: More information on FSC, including their principles and criteria, is available on their website at www.fsccanada.org . FSC in the Marketplace FSC is highly regarded in the global marketplace where Al-Pac sells its pulp, and is endorsed by environmental groups including Sierra Club, Greenpeace and the World Wildlife Fund. Many customers around the world are introducing FSC-certified paper and seeking suppliers of FSC-certified kraft pulp to meet growing consumer demand for environmentally-responsible products. Al-Pac also achieved Chain of Custody (CoC) certification that allows pulp customers and paper consumers to track a product from the shelf back to the forest to confirm the product originates either from a certified well-managed source and or a company controlled source. Companies who use FSC-certified pulp can affix the FSC logo to their product to demonstrate to consumers they support environmentally and socially responsible forest management practices. Communities and the Environment FSC certification provides assurance that Al-Pac is operating in a socially and environmentally responsible manner. Al-Pac s socially responsible operations include involving communities in forest management planning, such as the company s Landscape Advisory Group, supporting communities through employment and contracts, and understanding and respecting Aboriginal values of the forest. The company s demonstrated environmentally responsible operations include implementing ecosystem management to maintain biodiversity and a commitment to set aside more than 200,000 hectares of forest to serve as ecological benchmark areas. Continuous Improvement In its final report, SmartWood acknowledged that Al-Pac s triad approach to ecosystem management and its forest practices were sustainable and met international environmental standards. The report also highlighted Al-Pac s demonstrated efforts to involve communities in its forest management planning and practices, provide meaningful employment and business opportunities and contribute to the region s social and economic health. While the FSC certification assessment recognized many things Al-Pac is doing right, the audit also helped identify areas that the company will address as part of its ongoing continuous improvement process. These areas are identified among the 23 conditions attached to the successful FSC certification. Third-party auditors will conduct annual assessments to measure the progress that the company is making to fulfill these conditions. FSC certifications have a five-year life span, at which time the company must undergo another intensive audit.
