On January 16, Chauncey Beach, an itinerant American printer who d come to Brockville from Kingston, printed the first Brockville Recorder, a weekly and the only newspaper published between Kingston and Montreal at that time. This makes it one of Canada s oldest continuously published papers under the same name. Andrew Norton Buell, son of William Buell, wrote the first editorial. 1823 Beach sold the paper to William Buell Jr., another son of William Buell, founder of Brockville. Buell fended off rival Tory newspapers over the years, watching them fall by the wayside as his paper grew. The Recorder was then a large, four-page weekly unrivaled in size and content among its peers. Most of its local news stories and editorials were written by the editor and the bulk of its pages were filled with world and national news, displayed in challengingly fine print, with few graphics. 1848 Fire in the newspaper s printing office destroyed newspapers up to 1830. 1849 Buell retired as editor and sold the paper to David Wylie, a Scotsman, who took his post. Wylie had been a parliamentary reporter with the Montreal Herald. He helped establish the Canadian Press co-operative and was widely known as the Father of the Canadian Press.Wylie retired in 1875. 1870 In September The Recorder celebrated 50 years of publication. (At that time it was thought that the first newspaper had been printed by Beach in 1820.) Editor Wylie read a poem which began: Oh, guard we will this priceless gem, the freedom of the press....1873 First daily edition of the paper, called The Evening Recorder, was published on November 10. It was printed every day except Sunday, and came out in the late afternoon. From now on, the newspaper began reflecting more and more of the local and regional scene, as well as carrying national and international stories that came over the wire. A local reporter was hired, staff worked six days a week from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the paper was printed on a Washington Press handpress (now in the Brockville Museum and still in working order). Correspondents from outlying districts submitted weekly reports on the doings in villages and farms. 1875 In this year, nearly two decades of shifting ownership and management of the paper began, after Wylie s retirement. Dr. S. S. Southworth and Thaddeus W. H. Leavitt became publishers of The Recorder. When Southworth retired in 1879, Col. D. Wylie returned but sold his interests in 1885 to J. J. Bell, who remained until 1890. Leavitt left in 1881 and later became managing editor of The Recorder s rival, the Tory paper the Daily Times, founded in 1883. His place was taken by Thomas Southworth, who had been running a job printing business in town and became the paper s business manager and editor. In 1890 Southworth became the sole proprietor with John A. McKenzie as editor, and Lev Southworth, a local reporter. 1893 George P. Graham, former owner of the Morrisburg Herald, became a partner in the business. 1894 Recorder Printing Co. Ltd, a joint stock company, was formed, with Southworth as president and Graham as managing editor. 1895 Southworth retired and Graham became publisher, holding that post until his death in 1943. Graham entered politics as a Liberal, held cabinet positions and was appointed to the Senate. 1918 As a direct result of the First World War, Brockville s two rival newspapers, The Recorder and The Times, amalgamated. Said Graham: A town this size does not afford sufficient business, particularly under war conditions, to support two live dailies.
