The Apple Blossom Festival began in 1933 after a valley wide decision was made to celebrate and enjoy the natural springtime beauty of the Annapolis Valley. Community members participated with great enthusiasm at the springtime festival, and as a result of popularity, it was incorporated by the provincial legislature in 1935. The mission statement of the festival states, "The Annapolis Valley Apple Blossom Festival is a springtime celebration of our traditions and agricultural heritage. The aim is to promote the best family event for all valley communities and visitors, making it the leading festival in Atlantic Canada". Original objectives of the festival were to increase awareness of the valley s sustainable apple industry throughout North America and Europe; to publicize the scenic beauty and historic background of Longfellow s Land of Evangeline; and to provide an opportunity to foster and develop local talent through participation in festival events. In 1988 and 1991, the Apple Blossom Festival was selected by the American Bus Association as one of the "top 100" tourist events in North America. The festival continues to be a popular event, drawing most Annapolis Valley residents, and many tourists to events throughout the four days of operation. The festival continues to be run by a volunteer Board of Directors, and thousands of volunteers up and down the valley.
