As frustrating as it is - I am having email woes. CRA MD5 - SMTP AUTH attack on my server let hackers email out about 6-8000 emails. Unfortunately - this means Ouch - http://www .senderbase.org/ ( my server ) Information on the SBRS (Senderbase Reputation Score) http://www.senderbase.org/help/sbrs Known Impacted Hosts Very little information on when I can expect the reputation of the server to improve. I ll keep checking - hopefully in AM, enough time will have passed to improve the rating. In the meantime I have set up an alternate email server to deliver to MTS and SHAW customers. I ll try and keep a list of hosts that are refusing email here. Email may be delayed when delivered to these hosts - since I need to physically copy (FTP) the messages to an alternate server for delivery. If there is any delay in the reputation improving to a suitable level, I will migrate mail handling (and all other server functions) to a new server (cricket.vxn.ca). After reading about CRA MD5 - SMTP AUTH hacks. In general, there is much you can do to defend against them, it is a fault in the design of SMTP AUTH. Having decent passwords help significantly... but I would like to simply remove the vulnerability altogether. I am experimenting w/ forcing the client to connect using SSL or VPN. I need to compile a customer list and plan to shoot this website update, and information about what I need to happen for clients to reconfigure to access SMTP services. UPDATE: (Wednesday May 20, 2009 00:38am) another hit. there is a compromised password so I have disabled SMTP AUTH and will not be reenabling. I will authorize SMTP access by IP ADDRESS, SSL (testing) or VPN only. I can most likely get your IP address from the POP3/IMAP logs - and I will try to enable networks large enough that even if you rotate addresses from a pool, the pool I grant access is large enough. This DOES NOT resolve the issue of mail delivery to SHAW/MTS servers. I am going to try and migrate to a new mail server altogether tonight.
