What a Week 3/17/2006 With the conclusion of the Canadian National Championships in Thunder Bay, Ontario, the last big races of the season are now behind me. While some of my teammates will be traveling to various spring tour events throughout North America, I have decided to shut down operations for the season. Normally I go into the month long off season excited about a break from a long and arduous race schedule, however this year I am heading into my down time fresh and motivated. With a post Christmas focus of skiing well at nationals as my only operative, I chose to cut down on my travel plans and train all winter on the same Lappe Nordic courses that would host the Canadian Championships. I remained rested and focused on racing well at one event rather than expending energy and resources traveling an intense race schedule. The result was a great ten days of racing in which I was able to secure my first overall senior national championship title by compiling consistent results throughout the week. For the first time all year I was able to prove to myself that I can still ski at the top of the Canadian circuit. I could go on and on in great detail about every aspect of my races but I would rather touch on some aspects of this week that have begun to mean more to me than results and medals and titles. I have ski raced my entire life and rarely has a week of competition been as enjoyable as the previous one was. It began with the arrival of Brady Dunne and Chad Yurich (former Soo Finnish racers and current coaches) who took holiday time from work and made the voyage to Thunder Bay to complete a three person club relay team. Knowing that the duo had begun training only a month prior exclusively for the relay and watching them race their guts against some of the fastest racers in the country gave me a motivation and an appreciation that I could not have found anywhere else. It was being able to perform in front of my sponsors; Alan Cranston from Fresh Air Experience (whom I owe huge not only for his sponsorship but for his friendship as well), Jan Leman from Fischer, Dave Michaels from Exel and Mike Doble from Alpina, all of whom have contributed in a huge way towards the success that I was able to have this week. I also took immense pride in seeing the success of the Exel Racing Team as a collective unit. In our first year of operation we were able to collect a total of 14 medals and obtained at least one podium finish in each day of competition. A huge contributor to this success was Genvieve Renard who provided my teammates and I with the best skis of any team in the field. (Its easy to be up there when you have perfect grip and ultra fast skis) Throughout the week my racing was bolstered by one of the most impressive personal cheering sections I have ever had...ok the only personal cheering section I have ever had. This winter I took over the coaching duties for the Big Thunder Ski Club when coach Lisa Patterson was away in Europe with the National Team. The athletes that I coached (
