Welcome to the Website of the Action Alberta Alternative Association. We are a non-profit organization whose first order of business is the reform of the electoral boundaries in Alberta to redress the under-representation of Alberta s urban population in the Alberta Legislature. That will not be the AAAA s only priority. We also plan to battle the erosion of Albertans civil liberties. Alberta has outgrown its agrarian beginnings and is now a predominately urban society. However, this fact is not reflected in the way in which the electoral boundaries in Alberta are laid out. This issue has become especially important now that the results of the 2001 census have been released. That means the Electoral Boundaries Commission will study the impact that the population changes will have on electoral boundaries. Even though the cities show that they deserve increased representation, the Tories know their power comes from the disproportionate influence of the rural ridings and are unlikely to want that changed. Some delegates at the March 2002 convention even suggested that if the number of MLA s were reduced to make the government more fiscally responsible and more efficient, these reductions should come from the urban ridings, already woefully underrepresented. The relatively under-populated rural areas, generally conservative in political thought, hold the balance of power in Alberta politics. The vote cast by a rural voter is equivalent to sometimes hundreds of urban votes. ...
